ESTABLISHING WHO YOU ARE – QUALITY vs SKILL WHO YOU ARE vs WHAT YOU DO

Updated: Feb 11

When answering the question, Who are you?, its imperative that you're able to go beyond the surface and really get to the core of your makeup. Its not only easy but typical to answer the question, Who are you? by saying, "My name is So-and-so," or even, "I'm So-and-so's mom, dad, brother, or sister."  In other instances we may even hear a little being added to the name when responding to the question, like, "I'm Doctor So-and-so," or "I'm professor So-and-so." We often confuse the titles that we hold, with who we actually are. We tend to allow ourselves to get lost in the perceptions of the titles that are most socially accepted and complimentary to our individual lives.

If someone were to ask you, Who are you?, and you're unable to answer that question without giving a title or your name, you have a real problem on your hands.

Who you are consist of the moral compass that guides you, the core values and the code of ethics that you live by. See, when those titles are no longer relevant and the skills that warrant those titles have diminished, we will all be left with just who we are. We must remain aware of the fact that titles are given, while skills are learned and developed, but we will be who we are until our existence ceases.

Who are you? is a question that can only be answered through consistent action over time. Having the ability to understand who we are as individuals, can only derive from the experiences that life presents us. As we go through our personal maturations, life is going to present us with a multitude of experiences that we will have the opportunity to learn from. The knowledge that we're able to gain from those experiences and our perceptions of that knowledge, will inevitably shape and mold who we become. Who we are will ultimately be the result of an in-depth introspection that dissects the essence of our overall makeup. Over the course of our individual lives we will learn and develop skills that will warrant titles, but the specific characteristics and qualities that we develop, will ultimately define who we are.

"You can't start the next chapter in your personal book of life if you keep re-reading the last one"
